Een van mijn voornemens voor 2026 is om (eindelijk) de Vierdaagse van de IJzer te lopen.
Inschrijven kan pas in april, maar het hotel is alvast geboekt. 🥾

Today is the anniversary of Canadian Doctor John McRae writing his poem #InFlandersFields during the #FirstWorldWar.
In 2014 his poem took on new meaning for me as I stood on a battlefield shoulder-to-shoulder with people from many nations. The battlefield was the North Atlantic where Canada’s Navy fought & won the #BattleOfTheAtlantic in the #SecondWorldWar.
For our sailors, there are no “crosses row on row.”

John McCrae wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields", following the death of his friend during the Second Battle of Ypres.
The poem has became one of the most well-known poems of remembrance.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
