Before SH2R, Bloober Team made Layers of Fear 2 in which the protagonist is also named James, resembles SH2R James, and the game is full of SH2 references.
LOF2 James navigates through his traumatic memories with the help of an unseen man named "the Director" who often comments on James' psyche, although initially the game makes us think James is a Hollywood actor shooting a movie.
There are also several LOF2 references in SH2R, with the first obvious references being the movie theater and the rat that Laura saw in there. The Brookhaven director also keeps in his locked storage room one of the first inspectable items we find in LOF2, a conch shell that unlocks a memory for James.
