Hey Ej 👋🏼,
Congrats on the success of Beehiiv and was seems to be a beloved platform by many.
I know from firsthand experience how hard building a great product and accelerating growth can be.
In my experience, while tests like this leadform may move a core metric (I.e. signups) in a positive direction, they can also have unforeseen consequences, some of which aren’t as easily measured.
Below I’ll outline the impact it had on me. Maybe I’m alone in this. Maybe I’m not your core customer. Maybe it all doesn’t matter in the end. Do with it what you will.
Beehiiv has been at the top of my list for an idea I have for a future project.
When I landed on your site yesterday, I wasn’t there to sign up. I won’t be at that point for at least several weeks, if not months. Forcing an action before I could browse assumes I’m there to take action.
But, signups can take weeks, months, years. I’d imagine this is especially true for your product, where people are making a decision that is quite committal once they decide.
Landing on the site and being encountered by this leadform my thoughts were:
1. Oh boy, that looks terrible. Am I on the right site?
2. If they’re willing to do this, they clearly don’t have the taste for building product that I thought they did. What other sloppiness will I encounter if I choose their platform?
3. Shit, is their growth slowing down? Are they getting desperate to hit a growth curve to get their B this year? Are they going to be around a year from now?
Clearly you’re the expert here. You know your product, your customers, your goals, etc.
I truly wish you all the best. 🫶
