See arxiv.org/pdf/2505.11581 and the image attached shows a phylogenetic tree of sparse NNs which have been compositionally merged - roughly speaking - there is a dramatic difference between superficially mimicking a leafnode of tree (which would give you the same apparent output) vs using those constraints in the ancestral nodes to generate the output. The latter would allow you to create many other valid variations which respected the history and the compositional rules, and allow you to take further creative steps from that point. A simple example is, imagine you copied a thumbnail on youtube but you didn't understand WHY it had been composed in a certain way, why it used a certain type of texturing or font face (the creator had a deep theory built up over many years of experience) - you could only superficially copy it, any variation you did would corrupt the rules which generated it.

I really do miss USENET. My ISP stopped carrying the feed. Google Groups was no substitute. I used to run a program called "leafnode" to fetch the groups I subscribed to. I was using Emacs for reading news. Leafnode would then batch upload my responses.
