I read Engelke's book right after Ingold's Anthropology: Why it Matters, and, much to my surprise, I preferred Ingold's book; thinking about these books for undergrad classes and I don't think I'd use either in the linganth classes I teach
That seems right. I'm teaching a unit in my #linganth class on communication modalities and as @GretchenAMcC points out, a lot of our writing is closer to orality, and embodiment. I asked my students about reading. This is what they said: 1/

Michael Silverstein's posthumous book, Language in Culture, is breathtaking. His humor, insight, and enthusiasm for grasping connection are evident on every page. @CambridgeUP, Summerson Carr, Susan Gal, and Constantine Nakassis did a brilliant job.

Linganth twitter, does anyone have a copy of a meme, in the them: me: format about academic reading and Silverstein? I know I saw it, cannot find it, and am sad I cannot show to students.
I often ask this in my linguistic anthropology classes, both at the beginning & at the end of the semester. There’s a slight decrease in S’s who think of language as math, because they were taught this in high school (or before). I count that a win!
