📍 Khosrova, Salamas, Persia (present-day Iran) — Cologne (Köln-Nippes), Germany
Today, we remember and honor Father Paul Bedjan, one of the greatest Assyrian scholars and intellectuals in history.
📖 For more than fifty years, he devoted his life to researching, collecting, editing, and publishing ancient Syriac manuscripts. Through his tireless efforts, thousands of pages of Syriac literature and many priceless treasures of the Syriac Churches were preserved for future generations.
🏛️ Among his greatest achievements is the monumental Acta Martyrum et Sanctorum, a seven-volume collection preserving the lives of Eastern saints and martyrs. He also published the writings of great Syriac Fathers such as Mor Jacob of Serugh, Narsai, Isaac of Nineveh, and Babai the Great, making their works accessible to scholars throughout the world.
🌍 His publications remain indispensable to Syriac studies and stand as a lasting contribution to Assyrian heritage and Christian scholarship.
⚔️ During the final years of his life, Father Bedjan witnessed the tragedy of the Assyrian Genocide (Seyfo/Sayfo) and the suffering endured by Christian communities under Ottoman rule between 1914 and 1924. Despite these dark times, he remained faithful to his mission of preserving the history, faith, and identity of his people.
🕯️ Father Paul Bedjan passed away on 9 June 1920 in Cologne, Germany, leaving behind a priceless legacy for the Assyrian nation and the universal Church.
✝️ May his memory be eternal.
