The toxic P-or-P system affects the quality of papers and reviews alike. One of the tasks of the reviewer is to verify the validity and solidity of the argument, and this can't happen without verifying the references and their proper use. Yet, few ever do so nowadays.

Very true. I have been guilty of that in the past and I try very hard now to be very precise when citing others work. It takes a lot of time and careful eye. As a PI, we need to make sure we teach this to our trainees
