Kerncijfers (2024)
Inkomsten: Ruim € 204,9 miljoen (geconsolideerd; € 41,4 miljoen hoger dan begroot). Belangrijkste bronnen: nalatenschappen, donaties, acties en loterijen.
Besteding aan doelen (onderzoek, preventie, zorg, etc.): € 188 miljoen (hoger dan begroot).
Bestedingsratio: 85,8% van de baten ging naar missiedoelen (vorig jaar 85,6%; begroot 80,1%). Van elke euro ging dus ruim 85 cent naar de strijd tegen kanker.
Financieel resultaat: Positief, mede door beleggingsrendement van circa € 31,3 miljoen (netto, incl. ongerealiseerde koerswinsten).
Impact en activiteiten
Financiering van 195 nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten (o.a. focus op inclusieve palliatieve zorg, zorg voor jongvolwassenen met kanker en zeldzame kankers).
5-jaarsoverleving bij kanker gestegen naar 70% (van 25% in 1949).
Themagerichte financiering naast open calls (bijv. preventie, vroege opsporing, behandeling en kwaliteit van leven).
Samenwerkingen met o.a. NKI, Oncode Institute en patiëntenorganisaties.

KWF financiert kankeronderzoek grotendeels met particuliere giften. KWF is een goededoelenorganisatie die volledig afhankelijk is van donaties, nalatenschappen, acties en loterijen (geen structurele overheidssubsidie voor de kernactiviteiten). Van elke euro die binnenkomt, gaat ruim 85 cent naar de missie, waaronder onderzoek.

Donaties en giften: Ca. €46-47 miljoen.
Acties en evenementen (o.a. Alpe d'HuZes): Ruim €11-25 miljoen per grote actie; Alpe d'HuZes is al jaren de grootste fondsenwervende actie.
Loterijen (VriendenLoterij, Postcode Loterij etc.): Enkele miljoenen.
Grote gevers, bedrijven en overige acties.
Beleggingsrendement op reserves helpt ook mee (ca. €31 miljoen in 2024).
Totaal inkomsten: ruim €204,9 miljoen in 2024. Hieruit wordt een groot deel besteed aan onderzoek (open calls, themacalls, instituutsfinanciering).
Hoe wordt het geld aan onderzoek besteed?
KWF kent geld toe via een competitief proces:
Open calls (Exploration, Development etc.): Onderzoekers dienen voorstellen in op zelfgekozen onderwerpen. In 2024 > €43 miljoen toegekend.
Themageoriënteerde financiering (tracks): Gericht op specifieke doelen zoals preventie, vroege opsporing, geneesmiddelen en kwaliteit van leven. In 2024 bijna €48 miljoen.
Instellingsfinanciering: Jaarlijks tientallen miljoenen aan NKI (Antoni van Leeuwenhoek) en Oncode Institute (basis- en projectfinanciering).
Specifieke calls: PPS (publiek-private samenwerking met Health~Holland), Proof of Concepts, Young Investigator Grants, etc.
Alpe d'HuZes-fonds: Specifiek voor thema's Begrijpen, Opsporen en Behandelen/Genezen.
Voorstellen worden beoordeeld door (inter)nationale experts en (ex-)patiënten op wetenschappelijke kwaliteit, relevantie en haalbaarheid. KWF hanteert strenge financieringsvoorwaarden (geen overhead, specifieke kostencategorieën zoals personeel, materiaal, etc.).
Extra financiering
PPS-toeslag van Health~Holland (overheid) voor publiek-private samenwerkingen → dit stimuleert samenwerking met bedrijven (bedrijven dragen vaak in natura bij, KWF financiert het academische deel).
Kleine subsidies van overheden voor specifieke programma’s.
Kortom: Het onderzoek wordt betaald door miljoenen Nederlanders via donaties, acties en nalatenschappen. Dit maakt KWF relatief onafhankelijk, maar ook gevoelig voor economische schommelingen. Meer details staan in het Jaarverslag 2024 op kwf.nl.
