There is an inner life, and there are inner enemies to battle, conquer, and destroy. The enemies of our inner life are those forces that want to scatter our thoughts by focusing our attention on external things.
These enemies are lusts and desires of every kind that seek to distract our concentration by causing our thoughts to become attached to outward things that will pass away. This is perdition: the things that the heart was attached to pass away, while the person, who is an eternal being, is left with an emptiness that should have been filled with God Himself.
That is why it is so incredibly important now for God to turn our mind away from everything that is external—the things that will pass away—and turn it inward to the source of life that abides forever, just as our soul will abide forever—so that joy and unspeakable delight can fill us, beyond this time of corruptibility and continuing into unfathomed eternities. May the Lord equip us for this.
