A little bit of the Patternist series by Octavia Butler is told from Doro’s perspective - and he’s definitely the villain playing god

obligatory patternist tweet: same outcome = same consciousness. electrons do not have labels. also we know from hypothermia cases that the brain can be almost completely shut down and come back up with no loss of personality. are those people copies too?

During Lamento I keep wanting to be like “maybe if you like Lamento you’d like this book👀👀👀” Book is parable of the novel btw. I love Octavia butler but my favorite series by her is the patternist one btw

2025: parent losing his shit upon hearing that his child has been transitioning without his knowledge (he thinks gender transition is demonic) 2045: parent losing his shit upon hearing that his child has digitized without his knowledge (he's a continuitist instead of a patternist

Also important to note that the series was not published chronologically. The first Patternist book of the series, Wild Seed (the most elegantly written imo) was the last one she wrote

Ethics of releasing authors' works posthumously aside....I'm curious. Just started Patternist this year and liked it a lot. But I feel it could be tough if not written as well or not something she was satisfied with..

Octavia Butler is great on this in her unparalleled Patternist series
Patriarchy predates racism and that's why gender analysis be whooping so many people's ass in racially marginalized communities. Yess, you can experience racism and still engage in (cishetero)patriarchal violence. You can be oppressed AND an oppressor.

octavia butler hated the fourth book of the patternist series so much she refused to reprint it and it’s only now being re-released in september of this year!
Slightly controversial opinion, but I do think authors are allowed to change their minds about what they've written. Sometimes, you just realize that maybe something could've been handled better or done differently. The only issue is it's harder to retcon books unlike comics.

Jessie Fauset and though he's quite degenerate, Samuel Delany's early and midperiod sci-fi is not race allegory and really, Octavia Butler's psychic Patternist series isn't a race allegory, though race comes up, it's mostly about the nature of power and keeping it.
