hmm i don't think it's a metaphor, i've seen it as quite literal advice, "do this because that's how babies do it". what you described is just immersion, which is great, but still not comparable to a baby's immersion
hey! it's just incorrect. when you're not raised bilingual, you learn your second language through the filter of your 1st one, which is not at all the same process babies experience
my austrian friends (who of course don’t represent everyone) also had english from an early age. they can’t speak perfectly but the advantage of starting so early makes holding a simple conversation in english much easier for them. i wish i had the same for german/spanish
At least in Bordeaux I don’t know whether they don’t see it as a real place so they just don’t follow any social cues and don’t consider anyone around them, or they just normally don’t follow social cues or consider anyone around them…
for me it's hard to find something that is both enjoyable content and also useful for immersion. I stopped forcing myself to immerse because it just doesn't work out for me.
that's why I don't understand the hype for immersion. It might be good, yes. But it's not a solution to our struggles, neither the fastest method to learn. As everything, has to be used in a certain context.
bc they're thought that its bad to question stuff. i'd get in so much trouble just for asking questions about religion when i was a kid. for them, every truth, every answer is in their old little book and that lil book sums up their vision of the world.
