It’s literally incredible how the racing industry has allowed itself to be positioned like this. And the greatest lobbying success story in my lifetime by the pubs and poker machine lobby to somehow shift all the focus of problem gambling onto sports and race betting. The literally insane hysteria around problem gamblers in this area, whilst the ACTUAL main focus of the vast majority of problem gamblers, poker machines, get a free pass. No intelligent, sane person, who actually understands gambling would conceive such a situation could possibly exist, but here we are.
Recently, $40 MILLION was spent to set up and operate BETSTOP, a platform whereby adult human beings can register online to exclude themselves from all wagering companies. FORTY MILLION DOLLARS, the cost of which is of course borne by regular punters. Curiously there is no PUBSTOP, a register where problem gamblers can ban themselves from pubs across the country and from playing pokies in Dubbo when they live in Darwin. Or indeed ban themselves from drinking alcohol in pubs across the country, a vice that causes INFINITELY more harm to society than betting on the football or the horses. How did we let ourselves, as an industry, be positioned like this?

Horse racing has a problem gambling rate of 2.8%, identical to the National Lottery.
Scratchcard users? Around four times higher than racing. That's on the parliamentary record.
Affordability checks apply to racing bets. Not lottery players.
Online casino generated £5bn in gross gambling yield last year. Slots alone: £4.2bn. Research shows harm concentrated in the most deprived areas of the country.
Online horse racing: £767m. The lowest harm profile of any gambling product.
A racing punter spends hours studying form, watches a few hours of racing, makes informed decisions based on skill and accumulated knowledge.
A lottery player buys a ticket in 30 seconds and checks the numbers on Saturday.
One gets bank account surveillance three times a day courtesy of GamScore. The other gets a good causes logo.
