A team of Clemson students entered SC Quantum’s first-ever Quantathon in 2024 and left with much more than a top prize. Their journey has spanned much of the UN-declared International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (#IYQ25). With the support of Dr. Rong Ge and Clemson University’s Creative Inquiry Program, the team took their project beyond the weekend event. Over the past year they earned a grant from DoraHacks, competed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's #iQuHack, and served as student mentors at New York University Abu Dhabi’s International Hackathon for Social Good. Along the way they founded a quantum club on campus, mentored new students, and prepared their research for publication. Their journey shows the impact of early access, strong mentorship, and cross-sector partnerships in opening doors for students. At the AIMS Ghana Quantathon 2025, I joined a panel of distinguished speakers to discuss the role of quantum technologies in addressing pressing climate challenges. The event, brought together leading experts, industry players, academics, and students to examine how quantum science intersects with sustainable development. I used the medium to highlight how this emerging field could become a game-changer in our collective climate response efforts. I emphasized the transformative potential of quantum physics in enhancing climate modeling and forecasting. Traditional models often lack the precision required for timely and informed environmental decision making, particularly as climate variability becomes more complex. Quantum computing, with its ability to process vast datasets rapidly, offers us new possibilities for accurate predictions in weather patterns, sea-level rise, and greenhouse gas dynamics. all crucial components of Ghana’s long-term environmental planning. I also used the platform to urge young researchers and innovators to align their scientific pursuits with national development goals. I strongly believe that interdisciplinary collaboration among physicists, environmental scientists, policymakers, and the tech sector is key to real progress. Science must serve society, and quantum science must be part of that service by addressing the real problems we face today. My participation reaffirmed EPA’s commitment to advancing innovation in environmental governance and nurturing youth-led solutions to our most complex ecological challenges.
