🇸🇪 PhD Opportunity | Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden | 🔬 PhD Position: Human Geography — Regional Development & Green Industrial Investments Umeå University — home to Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR-Cas9 research — is seeking a doctoral candidate in Human Geography to study the regional impact of the green industrial transition in northern Sweden! 📌 What’s the Project About? Northern Sweden has become one of Europe’s most dynamic arenas for large-scale green industrial investments. This PhD project investigates how strategic planning can promote regional development during periods of rapid structural change, with a particular focus on Region Västernorrland. The doctoral thesis will address at least two of the following sub-studies: ✅ Tensions in multi-level governance & strategic spatial planning around major industrial investments ✅ The region’s position in global value chains & long-term competitiveness ✅ Firm dynamics, diversification & risk of development traps ✅ Social dimensions of labour market transitions — jobs, wages, migration & skills supply Research methods: primarily quantitative analyses & document analysis, potentially combined with interviews. As Europe races to secure sustainable access to critical raw materials and energy gases, public acceptance is one of the biggest challenges facing brine mining projects. This PhD project analyses the epistemic, economic, legal, political and social dimensions of community acceptance of multi-resource extraction projects.
