The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has reached a major construction milestone at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) Unit‑5 with the successful erection of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) inside the reactor building. Following the grant of Major Equipment Erection clearance by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), the installation of key nuclear island equipment has officially commenced—marking a critical transition in the project’s construction phase. Weighing approximately 320 tonnes, the RPV—considered the heart of a nuclear power plant—houses the reactor core where nuclear fission takes place. Its precise and safe installation using advanced heavy-lift cranes is a testament to engineering excellence, meticulous planning, and adherence to the highest safety and quality standards. This achievement also signifies the beginning of the erection of Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) equipment, marking significant progress in Unit-5. The milestone reflects the strong collaboration and coordinated efforts between NPCIL and Atomstroyexport (ASE), Russian Federation, showcasing global partnership in advancing India’s nuclear capabilities. Kudankulam Site stands as a cornerstone of India’s clean energy ambitions. With Units 1 & 2 already generating power at rated capacity and having produced nearly 130 billion units of electricity, the project has already helped avoid approximately 112 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions —a significant contribution to environmental sustainability. As Units 3, 4, 5, and 6 progress through advanced and ongoing stages of construction, the Kudankulam site is steadily moving towards its full potential of 6,000 MWe installed capacity, reinforcing India’s long-term commitment to reliable, clean, and sustainable energy.
