The hardest thing about stopping is not the stopping itself. It is what the stopping reveals. People who have been moving at a relentless pace for a long time often find that when they finally slow down the silence is not peaceful. It is loud. It is full of things that have been waiting patiently for the noise to stop. The grief that never got processed. The relationship that has been running on fumes for years. The question about whether any of this is actually what they want that keeps getting buried under the next deadline. The work was not just productive. The work was protective. It kept all of that at a manageable distance. And this is why rest is so genuinely difficult for high achievers. Not because they are workaholics. Not because they lack discipline. Because rest removes the thing that has been standing between them and an encounter with themselves that they have been postponing for years. That encounter does not have to be frightening. But it does have to happen. Mental Health Together is here for that too. 🌿 #EmotionalTruth #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #WhoAreYouWhenYouStop #Burnout #MentalHealth

Take away the job. The title. The project. The thing you are currently working toward. Who is left? Most people who are deep in ambitious burnout find that question genuinely difficult to answer. Not because they are shallow or one-dimensional. Because they have been so completely inside the doing for so long that the being has quietly receded. The work filled the space. And the space that the work does not fill starts to feel wrong. Empty in a way that needs to be fixed with more work. Rest does not feel like rest to these people. It feels like loss. Like falling behind. Like the version of themselves that matters is disappearing. But you are not what you produce. You were someone before the job and you will be someone after it. The work is something you do. It is not something you are. The question is not who you are at work. The question is who you are when the work stops. And if you do not know the answer, that is not a failure. That is an invitation. 🌿 #Identity #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #WhoAreYouWhenYouStop #Burnout #MentalHealth

We do not celebrate people who rest well. We celebrate the ones who stay late. Who reply at midnight. Who take the call on their day off. Who are always available, always producing, always one more thing further than everyone else. We call it dedication. We call it work ethic. We quietly admire it even when we know it is costing them something significant. And then we are surprised when they burn out. Burnout is not a personal failure. It is a predictable outcome of a system that was designed to extract as much as possible from people while offering as little structural support as possible in return. A system that treats rest as a reward rather than a requirement. That mistakes endurance for strength. That has no off switch and expects the people inside it to compensate for that with their own bodies and minds. You did not fail the system. The system failed you. It just did it so gradually and so consistently that it started to look like your fault. It was not your fault. 🌿 #Mission #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #Burnout #TheFinishLineThatKeepsMoving #SystemNotYou

Maybe you already know. You can feel it. The flatness that has settled over everything. The exhaustion that a full night of sleep does not touch. The work that used to mean something feeling like just work. The version of you that shows up every day doing what needs to be done and coming home with nothing left. You know. And you are still going. Not because you are in denial. Not because you are choosing to ignore it. Because stopping has a cost you genuinely cannot afford right now. The mortgage does not pause. The people depending on you do not stop needing things. The identity you have built around what you produce does not easily make room for the version of you that steps back. Knowing you are burning out and being unable to stop is not weakness. It is one of the most common and least acknowledged experiences of burnout. And it deserves the same compassion as the person who did not see it coming. You are not failing. You are carrying something genuinely heavy. That is different. 🌿 #Validation #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #Burnout #KnowingAndContinuing #MentalHealth

Burnout does not arrive suddenly. It builds slowly, in stages, over months or sometimes years. And most people only recognise it at the final stage, by which point it has been accumulating long enough to require serious attention. Stage 1 is the push. The pressure arrives and your response is to work harder. More hours. Less sleep. More effort. This feels like the right response. It feels like dedication. It is actually the beginning of a problem. Stage 2 is the numbness. The passion fades. The things that used to excite you stop exciting you. You are still showing up, still delivering, still functioning. But something has gone flat. You tell yourself you are just tired. That it is just a busy season. Stage 3 is the wall. The body stops cooperating. Motivation disappears completely. Getting through an ordinary day requires everything you have and leaves nothing behind. Most people ask for help at Stage 3. Most people could have changed something at Stage 1. Which stage are you in right now? 🌿 #Educational #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #BurnoutStages #Burnout #MentalHealth

Good! This just goes to show that they are totally incompetent as there’s far more evidence on eg. Covid contracts & missing £B’s. All this is great for the Independence cause. Why does a piss up in a brewery spring to mind?? #runningonempty

Most people who cannot stop working tell themselves it is because they love what they do. Sometimes that is true. But sometimes the honest answer is different. Sometimes the inability to stop has nothing to do with the work itself and everything to do with what stopping would require. Stopping would mean quiet. And quiet means hearing the thing you have been too busy to face. The question you have been outrunning. The feeling you have been drowning out with deadlines and targets and the next thing on the list. The work is not always the point. Sometimes the work is the escape. The most socially acceptable way to avoid being alone with yourself. And the thing about running from something is that it does not go away. It just waits. With more patience than you have stamina. What would you hear if you stopped? 🌿 #EmotionalTruth #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #TheFinishLineThatKeepsMoving #Burnout #MentalHealth

After this project you will rest. After this quarter. After this promotion. After this launch. After things calm down. After you get to the next level. After you prove yourself. After you feel like you have done enough. You have been saying after for years. And the thing about after is that it never arrives. Because the moment you cross one finish line another one appears. And you have been moving fast enough that you never had to stand still long enough to notice that the finish line was never fixed. It was always just ahead of wherever you were. That is not ambition. That is a pattern. And the pattern is costing you something you cannot get back. You are not your productivity. But you have been living as though you are for so long that it has started to feel like the same thing. What would you be if you stopped? That question is worth sitting with. 🌿 #Identity #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #TheFinishLineThatKeepsMoving #Burnout #MentalHealth

Safe Space Sunday. 🌿 This week we talked about the burnout that does not look like burnout. The kind that wears the disguise of productivity and ambition and a life that looks fine from the outside. Most people who experience this noticed something was off long before they admitted it. Long before they told anyone. Long before they had a name for it. There was a moment. Maybe small. Maybe easy to dismiss. A Sunday evening when the week could not be remembered. A finish line that felt like nothing. A morning when getting up cost more than it should have. Today we want to hear about that moment. When did you first notice something was off? Not when you admitted it. Not when you told someone. Just when you first noticed. It does not have to be a long answer. Even one sentence. Drop it in the comments. We are reading every single one. 🌿 #SafeSpaceSunday #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #InvisibleBurnout #Burnout #WhenIFirstNoticed

We have built a world that celebrates the output and ignores the cost. The promotion gets announced. Nobody asks what the person gave up to earn it. The project gets delivered. Nobody asks what state the person who delivered it is in. The result gets celebrated. The cost of producing it quietly accumulates somewhere nobody is measuring. We call relentless work ethic. We call exhaustion dedication. We call the inability to stop ambition. And we have convinced an entire generation that the only acceptable pace is one that is quietly unsustainable. This is not a personal failing. It is a cultural architecture. And it is worth naming directly. We do not have a productivity problem. We have a sustainability problem. And we have been calling it ambition for so long that most people cannot tell the difference anymore. Mental Health Together exists to say what the system will not. You are not a machine. And running like one has a cost. 🌿 #Mission #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #Burnout #InvisibleBurnout #SustainabilityNotProductivity

There is a voice that makes burnout harder to acknowledge when your life looks good. It says, you chose this. You worked for this. You wanted this. Other people would be grateful for what you have. You have no right to be struggling. And so you push through. You tell yourself it is just a busy season. You count your blessings. You remind yourself of how far you have come. And the exhaustion stays because counting your blessings does not address the cost of the pace you have been living at. Burnout is not a complaint about your life. It is information about what it is costing you to live it this way. And information does not need to earn the right to exist. You are allowed to be exhausted by the life you built. Even if you love it. Even if you chose every part of it. Even if it looks completely fine from the outside. Gratitude and exhaustion are not opposites. Both can be true at the same time. 🌿 #Validation #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #InvisibleBurnout #Burnout #YouAreAllowedToBeExhausted

If you have slept more and still felt exhausted, taken time off and come back feeling exactly the same, had a holiday and been back to zero within a week, you were probably not just tired. Tiredness is fixed by rest. Burnout is not. Burnout has a different mechanism. It does not respond to sleep the way ordinary exhaustion does because it is not caused by ordinary exhaustion. It is caused by something more fundamental, a sustained mismatch between what you are giving and what you are getting back. Between what you are doing and what it means to you. Between the pace you are living at and the pace your body and mind can actually sustain. Rest helps. Rest is still important. But rest alone does not fix burnout any more than a plaster fixes a fracture. What burnout actually requires is understanding what depleted you in the first place. And being willing to change something more significant than your sleep schedule. You are not broken. You are burned out. There is a difference. And it matters. 🌿 #Educational #MentalHealthTogether #MHT #RunningOnEmpty #Burnout #BurnoutVsTiredness #MentalHealth
