Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) aren't just a threat to journalists. Academics increasingly face legal threats designed to deter research into powerful individuals, companies and institutions. The Department for Education is now gathering evidence on the impact of these tactics on academic freedom. If you're a UK-based academic, please consider completing the survey and helping ensure policymakers have a clearer picture of the scale of the problem. Deadline is 19 June. Baroness @tinastowell has today launched her Private Members’ Anti-SLAPP Bill in the House of Lords. SLAPPs are used to intimidate journalists and others speaking out on matters of public interest through costly legal action. Stronger protections are needed, and this Bill is an important step forward.
