Sink your bucket (Part 2) __ Listen carefully, and with kindness, too When I lived in South Africa, a white South African colleague who was very compassionate came to me for some advice: “My gardener who had been with me for a long time recently died," he explained. "His relatives have asked for assistance to pay for his burial in his home country. Why can’t they bury him here, given that he has lived here for decades, and besides, it’s very expensive to repatriate a body," he sighed. "What is your advice?” “Please help them. It’s important for that man’s family, and it shows your own humanity," I replied gently. He did as I suggested. The bereaved family's "problem" is one that some of you may have experienced yourselves: the costs of a funeral and burial can lead to near total impoverishment for some families and relatives. Hearing this, the philanthropist in me demanded from the entrepreneur in me... a #Solution. “What if we could create an insurance product whereby people pay a small monthly subscription which covers the cost of a funeral?” My solution was a #Product we called EcoSure which does just that: Customers take out a policy that can be as basic as funeral costs, or may even include cash payouts to cover the first few months after the loss of a breadwinner. Today it is a business with millions of customers. Now sometimes people who I respect mention various problems they see deeply impacting people, or the environment in which they live. I generally listen carefully, and again... sometimes the philanthropist in me wants the #Entrepreneur in me to find a solution. This can include putting a team together to do research and explore business models. #ShoutOut to Niza Aritha Zulu, co-founder of Bio Green Technology in Zambia! __“Sustainable, reliable aquaculture technologies for the future of Africa” Congratulations to Niza Aritha Zulu and her co-founder, Mukonka Nkamu, for launching Bio Green Technology, an AI-enabled solution empowering Zambian fish farmers to build successful businesses in a country where more than half the population depends on fish as their primary source of protein. “We provide smart water monitoring devices and a digital support platform that helps small and medium scale fish farmers improve productivity, reduce fish mortality, and adopt sustainable aquaculture practices.” [Niza's one-sentence business description in her GoGettaz application] Bio Green Technology products and services span the construction of fish ponds, sales of fish fingerlings, and onsite training. But it's her patented AI-enabled "FEBI Smart System" and mobile platform that sets her business apart. I understand that Niza first founded Bio Green in memory of her late father, who was a fish farmer, and that she first started out experimenting in her back yard where she made a prototype using recycled materials. Fast forward to now, Niza and her team are collaborating with the University of Zambia and other experts to take Zambian aquaculture to a new AI-enabled level. Here are Niza's reflections in response to the four questions all the Top-13 GoGettaz were asked: #Inspiring quote that guides me as an entrepreneur: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”. It reminds me that progress often starts small but can create impact, especially in solving real problems in our communities. Another one that deeply resonates with me is from one of the 2023 GoGettaz winners. I heard it while watching the 2024 pitch competition in Kigali, Rwanda, online. She simply said, “Do it scared.” It was a powerful reminder for me that courage is not the absence of fear, but action in spite of it. #Best/memorable advice: The most memorable advice I’ve received was from my mentor Ms. Cassandra Mtine. She told me to “Build with your customers, not just for them”. Her advice has shaped how my team and I co-create aquaculture solutions directly with fish farmers to ensure relevance and sustainability. #Worst advice I’ve received: "Wait until everything is perfect before you commercialize your innovation". In reality, I have learnt through experience that innovation grows through iteration; waiting for perfection would have meant that our innovation, “Febi smart system” would still be an idea to date. #Insight I wish I knew when I got started: Resilience is as critical as innovation. The road is rarely straight, but adaptability keeps a vision alive when the path changes. Faith is nothing if there is nothing that demands it... __Faith is seeing victory in impossible situations. I remember like it was yesterday (30 years ago), driving into Harare and seeing newspaper billboards saying, “Masiyiwa’s dream crumbles...” Arriving to my office, my team of about 35 people was waiting to see my response. A visitor was also waiting to see me. He said he was a recently arrived missionary from America, and was looking for a mobile phone service contract. I asked him if he had read that morning’s news. He replied: “I don’t read newspapers. What’s in it?” “I have no license yet to even offer service,” I explained. “Well, the Lord told me you do, and that is why I’m here; so whose report will you believe?” He then took out a bag full of money equivalent to a year’s phone service contract. I called my colleague Zac Wazara and asked him to take the money. Then I left my office and went to examine a site where I wanted to put up a cell tower, having assigned each of my people work for the day. I'm sure you've all heard of the book called “The Audacity of Hope”. When someday I write my own book about my improbable journey as an entrepreneur, I might call it “The Audacity of Faith”. It is through faith that I have confronted every situation as an #Entrepreneur. That situation decades ago in Zimbabwe was just one of many, many challenges I have faced and come through. There have been so many improbable challenges requiring faith that I just take it as a given. Some of you cry that your government does not support you; Well, mine didn’t exactly like me at the time! Some cry that they have no access to banks; most banks considered me too high a risk! Some cry that they have no access to venture capital; they considered me too risky as well! None of it matters to the person who is determined through faith to find a way forward. You have heard me say before: “I would rather lose believing God was with me, than win knowing He was not with me. If you do something which is corrupt, cruel, or blatantly unfair; you know God is not in it.” What would be the title of the book about your own journey?
