Did you know some corals spawn only once per year? Shedd scientists recently collected gametes and reared coral larvae aboard Shedd's research vessel, the Coral Reef II, to study how this crucial life stage of coral survives in warming oceans. #spawnathon

Spawnathon 2024 has commenced! In preparation for Montipora capitata spawning next week, we retrieved tagged non-bleached parent colonies from the field that will be stored in tanks throughout the summer.

The first big Montipora capitata (Rice Coral) spawn of 2023 has been a success! The last few days have been spent watching these larvae grow and preparing them for settlement. Happy #spawnathon everyone!
