Six days.
Thatās all California has left before the March 31 federal single audit deadlineāand once again, the Controllerās office is playing with fire.
Iām Herb Morgan, candidate for California State Controller, and hereās the truth: under federal law, California has to submit its annual financial report showing where billions in federal dollars went and whether that money was handled properly. That is not optional. That is basic accountability.
And yet since Malia Cohen took office in January 2023, California has missed this deadline every single year.
Let that sink in.
Weāre talking about billions tied to Medi-Cal, homelessness programs, housing, health services, and other critical support Californians actually depend on. When Sacramento canāt get its books in on time, it is not some harmless paperwork issue. It puts federal funding at risk of being delayed, frozen, or withheld.
This is exactly what happens when politics replaces competence.
The Controllerās office should be the financial watchdog for Californiaānot the place where deadlines go to die. Californians deserve real accountability, real oversight, and a Controller who understands that keeping the books straight is not a suggestion. Itās the job.
