Day 79 of trying to be selected as a mentee of @0xSimao Chapter 6 – Using SLOAD Hooks with Storage Mappings Previously, I worked with SSTORE hooks for mappings. In this chapter, the contract was slightly modified: an unchecked block was added when updating the pointsOf[_user] mapping. Because of unchecked, the Prover explored wraparound (overflow) scenarios. It found an unrealistic state such as: - pointsOf[user] = 2 - totalPoints() = 0 - g_sumOfUserPoints = 0 This is logically impossible in a real execution because if totalPoints is 0, no individual user should have 2 points. However, the Prover considers all mathematically possible states — including overflow-induced wraparounds — unless we constrain them. To fix this: - Since pointsOf is first read (SLOAD) and then updated (SSTORE), - I added an SLOAD hook. - Inside the hook, I constrained the read value with: require points <= g_sumOfUserPoints This ensures the Prover only considers realistic states where an individual user's points cannot exceed the global sum. After adding this constraint, both the rule and invariant verified successfully. Key lesson: When unchecked is introduced, the Prover may explore wraparound states that are mathematically valid but logically impossible in the intended model. Hooks constraints help restrict to realistic executions. Chapter 7 – Verifying an Invariant Using Ghost and Hook The goal was to verify: totalSupply == sum of all user balances Using the Solmate ERC20 implementation. I successfully implemented the verification both: - As an invariant - As a rule I completed the verification independently before checking the official solution, which was a good confidence boost. Chapter 8 – Preserved Block and Its Role in Invariant Verification The Prover verifies invariants using induction: 1. Base case → Holds after constructor. 2. Inductive step → Assume invariant holds before a function call, then verify it holds after. However, the Prover explores all symbolic states, including unrealistic ones: - Contract calling itself - Balances greater than totalSupply - Impossible caller patterns - Unreachable pre-states These can cause false invariant violations. Solution: preserved block A preserved block lets us add extra assumptions for invariant verification, restricting the Prover to realistic execution paths. It is: - Placed inside the invariant body - Written using the preserved keyword - Can be function-specific or generic Using preserved blocks: - We eliminate unreachable symbolic states - Avoid false failures - Keep the invariant logically correct I also practiced using preserved blocks while verifying invariants for WETH.
