[HAPPENING NOW]: ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni, Provincial Secretary, Evelyn Mondlana, MPLs Emma More and John Moodey, at the Mamelodi West Hostel to give feedback on challenges impacting residents.
Human Settlements MEC committed over R33 million to address the poor conditions of the hostel, with top 3 emergency repairs having been identified as:
1. Electricity Reconnection & Installations: Repairs of broken lights, plugs, isolators, and repair of distribution and wireways. This also addresses issues like untidy exposed cables, rusting distribution boxes, and end-of-life light switches and fittings.
a. Time Estimate: 6 months from approval of proposal.
b. Cost Estimate: R18,894,847.00.
2. Roofing Proposed Intervention: Removal and replacement of entire rusted roof sheeting with new corrugated sheeting, sealing against water ingress, replacement of damaged/rotten timber roof elements, ceilings, cornices, and repainting of ceilings. This addresses visible issues like damaged ceilings, water ingress, and rusted roof sheeting
a. Time Estimate: 3 months from approval
b. Cost Estimate: R1,300,000.00.
3. Repairs of Water & Sewer Lines Issues: Honey sucking and rubbish removal, jetting & high-pressure water cleaning, manhole and pipe system rehabilitation & replacement. Issues identified include broken toilets, non-functional plumbing systems, and blocked drainage.
a. Time Estimate: 8 months from approval.
b. Cost Estimate: R12,909,780.00.
The total direct cost for these three emergency repairs is R33,104,627.00. However, the overall project cost, including preliminaries, external work, electrical, provisional sums, contingencies, and Value Added Tax (VAT), amounts to R51,478,075.83.
