‘Old Haa of Brough’ built in 1672, is Yell's museum run by voluntary trustees. On the second largest island in Shetland, with local artefacts, heritage and kin
What an asset people who had the foresight to record people are! Also to the people who have transcribed audio - what a time consuming job - so well done - come along and see/hear some when we open - 15 days to go! #oldhaa#TalesOfScotland
Ansonia Clocks - have we got any experts, one of a couple of clocks in our exhibition this year says Ansonia. Google says they were 'made in Ansonia, Connecticut, in 1851 and which moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1878' #oldhaa#ansoniaclock
Books available if anyone would like to give us a donation for them. #oldhaa Jekka McVicar - New book of Herbs; The Music of the Land: the music of Freeland Barbour with photography by Cailean MacLean
The tale of the never filling folder. Once the exhibitions are completely sorted, the forgotten folder (scanned ✔️ typed ✔️ Collections spreadsheet ✔️) will hopefully start filling again. #oldhaa#museumtrustees#hoursoffuntocome
When open, we have a range of different cakes on offer in the Tearoom each day, come when we are open to see if your favourite is up for grabs. Remember we also have take away boxes 😉 #oldhaa#faerdiemaet
Our lending library has been a great way to get the Old Haa out to people in Yell, during lockdowns and periods of isolation. As the lighter nights are coming in, there may be less time for reading afore da fire. Come plan your winter reads in the Reading room! #oldhaa
Thanks so much to the people of Stepping Out and to very supportive local people who have been identifying photos for us over the last year. There will be more left in the Reading room for people to help us with, throughout our opening times. #oldhaa#genealogy#reddinupkin
One of the files to be read in our Reading Room, you can hear the audio too - some excellent stories, in dialect from marking your geese before slipping to the hill, to stories about the isles and sounds of Yell Sound. #oldhaa#TalesOfScotland#Shetland#dialect#ForWirds
Excellent to be in the final stages of exhibitions preparation - we are eternally grateful to our Museum Accreditation Mentor - Carol for her Text writing training last night, now to be concise😀. More details to follow soon.
Anybody got any free time on a Thursday night 6:30-8:30pm through the winter? We are trying to digitise our magnificent photos - so if anyone was available and willing to come and scan photos for us we would love to hear from you. #oldhaa
Are you interested in Yells history? Are you keen to improve your daily steps? If so we need you! Our history group needs to set up exhibitions over the winter. We meet once a month (second Tuesday of each month) at 6:30pm at the Old Haa. Get in touch if you would be able to help
Thanks to all our crafters, the RNLI, raffle donors, the people who looked after a stall and all the people who came to support us on Saturday at our fundraiser. It was different from our usual fundraiser but it was so good to see everyone. We raised £886.95.👏 #oldhaa#RNLI
COP26 should really be hosted at the Old Haa next time round... the delegates could cycle on their electric bikes and get charged up while they debate. They could also admire our recycling - can anyone spot the Westsandwick church pulpit in this photo? #oldhaa#cop26
In true COP26 style, we only use paper straws, paper takeaway boxes and paper coffee cups, come along to our joint fundraiser on Saturday (in the Burravoe Hall) for a fancie! #oldhaa#COP26
During COP26 why not sign up for our lending library? To reduce our carbon footprint we only offer this to Yell residents currently living in Yell. Get in touch if you would like some interesting reading through the winter. #oldhaa#COP26
With COP26 really getting started today, we thought we would remind you that we have a private wind turbine which heats our building. Perfect for these windy day and nights when the weather is getting a bit cooler and the daylight is much shorter. #oldhaa#COP26
We are having a joint fundraiser with the RNLI on Saturday 6th November, come along and see local crafters - Mary Williamson, Marion Anderson, Bryony Hansen, Jem Williamson, Fiona Taylor, Julia Smith, Rachel Marriott, Pauline Walsh, Alistair Christie-Johnston, Gena Arthur #oldhaa
Today we are shut - see you all in April 2022. We the trustees would like to express such gratitude to our very capable museum assistants, Nita, Lydia, Honor and Lisa. They kept everyone safe, which we are indebted to their hard work, professionalism and caring. #oldhaa#thanks
