In the 7th chapter of “To Have and To Hold”, Hange makes the decision to inform Levi of the Ackerman proposal. For a man who’d only ever held value as a weapon of war- defined by the strength that made him a monster- being received as *only* a man, feels a cruel reminder of such.
In the 6th chapter of “To Have & To Hold”, Hange’s hope is bludgeoned by a proposal to utilize the Ackerman’s bloodline by way of breeding. Seated alongside those entrusted to save humanity, Hange realizes those men have none of their own. The truth is a weapon in the wrong hand.

acespec hange whose friendliness is often misconstrued as sexual interest bc everyone’s mind goes there, but it doesn’t even make hange sad as much as it unlocks in hange a curiosity for why it happens. are people so starved to be known that they know no other forms of intimacy?

that another person who holds your hand and your story and has genuine curiosity must be in lust. isn’t it a sad thing, then? to think that there’s no other way to be loved than because of the body, rather than the mind? those are the things I think hange would consider deeply

and so, hange may be an uncomfortable person to be around for those who experience safety in duplicity. wearing a mask but wanting to be seen and held too. hange sees past all of it, receives people as they are and for who they are. that’s what hange’s titan love represents imo!

just know that every time I make a hange post, the gaps in posts aren’t just me fixing typos (and posting them anyway) but also just staring at hange and getting distracted bc look at this??

I love to be just some strange entity who comes out of the ground to love hange in so many words. thoughtful groundhog bird thing who loves hange

its been discussed before, but it’s actually wild how much of hange’s actual chara was cut from uprising. hange’s doubt and motivations are outlined, specifically the guilt re: pastor nick that fuels hange’s core moral conflict represented by sannes and perpetuating the cycle.

it’d be a huge manifesto to even scratch at the surface, bc even this cabin scene being cut is egregious. I can’t even blame others for thinking hange is one note, bc all of the crucial scenes that show said depth are basically gone. going from desolate to resolved was a journey!

ideally everyone would read the manga but i would go as far to say that any hange fan has to at least read uprising, bc that establishes hange’s significance as a moral tether for the entire narrative. the anime gets it across, but not nearly as well, hence the misunderstanding.

in the manga, it’s Hange who discovers titans are human, and feels immediate shame. Hange cares for all, the monsters in men and men in monsters. I like to think Connie wouldn’t have had to visit alone. that Hange took care to treat her kindly, promising to look after her son.

hange isn’t as perceptive as levi (whom I would say has the highest emotional intelligence) but isn’t blind. so I think it speaks to hange knowing how heavy this is, to recognize levi’s pain too. by contrast, erwin is lost in his own dream, as he’s found another key to unlock it.

this same hange- whose anger only ignites in the face of harm to others or denial of the truth- would most definitely care deeply for connie, and his mother. but the fight continues after this discovery, and I believe the through line of protecting the world remains Hange’s focus
