I've enjoyed most of the last 13 years or so in this mad place. Alternative social media in my profile - take care of yourselves and I hope to reconnect sometime somewhere down the road.

Also note @UKLabour are going to raise the fare for this excellent service another 4.6% in the new year, because nothing says 'we support working people' like making it more expensive to get to work
I quit cycling through central Reading - too dangerous - now I go to @UniofReading via Earley station which means changing. This morning @GWRHelp conjured yet another 10 minute delay out of nothing, another missed connection and 30 mins wasted. And we wonder why everyone drives.

It's that time of year when around one million Redwings are arriving into the UK, their 'tseep' calls overhead drowned out by constant fireworks with their unknown lethal and sublethal impacts on migrant birds.
The detonation of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of #fireworks to mark the #NewYear brings joy to millions whilst simultaneously contributing to atmospheric pollution, killing wildlife and causing considerable suffering to many people and their domestic animals. Thread🧵1/

We protested in the 90s, warning of this. We’ve come to accept ‘a month’s worth of rain fell in a few hours’ as new normal. A year’s worth of rain fell in 8 hours in #Valencia, killing people, wrecking lives. Everything we do now must powerfully include Climate, Justice, Nature..
As the waters recede it’s not hard to see why so many have lost their lives in and around Valencia. Recovery will take years and cost billions.

Morning @reading_buses, would be helpful for the driver to let us know *before* getting on and tapping card that the bus isn't leaving for 15 minutes (Reading station just now). Thanks!

Ah, that time of year when it's 16 degrees and super humid before 8am but because it was cold a couple of days ok all the trains and commercial buildings have the heating cranked up 🥵

That'll be the same Dale Vince who told a crowd in London this summer (I know because I was there) that climate change is not a cause of biodiversity loss. If you have enough money you can buy your way onto a platform to speak as much nonsense as you like.
. @DaleVince is pushing Daily Mail-type falsehoods about heat pumps while promoting a much worse alternative: his highly damaging, ecologically illiterate attempt to turn millions of acres of the UK into biogas fields. I hope the government ignores him. theguardian.com/environment/…

Started the day chatting with BBC local radio for @BerksBirdClub, now off to @UniofReading @ReadingBioSci open day. Then I shall need a break from being effusive and knowledgeable (it's all an act I tell you!)

Accidentally stumbled on this Steppe Grey Shrike (subsp of Great Grey) in Dunbar, Scotland last month, saw the cluster of lenses then the bird! Unlikely I'd have deliberately twitched this sad lost individual but getting this close to a wild shrike was rather cool.

How much does it cost to buy here? It costs diverse, supportive, happy communities: priced out by weekenders & once-a-monthers of 2nd/3rd homes & AirBnBs who rarely contribute to community; schools closing & struggling, pubs, shops closing. Rolling hills full of pheasants & guns.
