It’s crazy to me how much amazing historical wrestling there is available for free and no one watches. Like literally. Stuff that’s been on YouTube for years and has like 1000 views or less.

“Rare footage from the territories” and it’s just something WWE has owned for decades and could have released to the public whenever they wanted.

Been thinking more about Bob Backlund never getting due credit. Overshadowed by Bruno, swept aside for Hogan. Yet he reigned for 6 years atop the most high profile company in the business during a period of white hot business. And among the top 5 longest world title reigns ever.

Bockwinkel was so good at little details that conveyed the physical struggle of wrestling. Wanting Choshu’s leg so bad that he lunged for it and missed. Selling pain from arm attacks while applying a headscissors. Aggressively following Choshu as he lost a hold. Good stuff.

I’ve spent a lot of time watching Nick Bockwinkel matches lately. I love his intensity and how he made every moment mean something, big or small.

#OnThisDay in 1988: Jerry Lawler defeated Curt Hennig to win the AWA Worlds Heavyweight title. Lawler's quest for a Worlds Title had been going on for 14 years. This card drew 8,000 fans ($52,000) at the Mid-South Coliseum. May 9th was declared "Jerry Lawler Day" in Memphis.

Ted Turner has passed away. His influence stretched far beyond the realm of pro wrestling, but his liking for it and what it did for his TBS Superstation in those early years led to a period of competition that is unrivaled. Without him, there is no Monday Night War.

The Hogan debate is exposing how badly WWE has conditioned wrestling history. Hogan mattered enormously. But if your take is that successful pro wrestling effectively began in 1984, you are not discussing history. You are repeating the corporate myth. Let me explain.. 🧵

Wrestling can be raw and primal, gritty and technical, slick and beautiful, legitimately funny, even dumb and fun. It can tell human stories, tragic and inspirational. It can provide escape, speak to our times, and help you find yourself and your people. Don't just consume slop.
