I also want to push back on this being an empathy issue. Having empathy for someone's feelings and needs does not correlate to how well you can respond and care for that. Knowing someone needs comforting words, a listening ear, etc. but hating the idea of doing that can coexist

I'm generally good at managing it at work and with small groups but being in a real life conversation where both friends/interesting people AND strangers I have no interest in are present is genuine hell on earth. pretending to care equally is socialization final boss

maybe controversial take but I find it really hard to resonate with "wow isn't this dystopian novel so scary and makes you question your own society" as if current society isn't also insanely strange and many rituals and traditions exist for the sake of existing
