"Las Meninas" is one of the most revolutionary (and mysterious) paintings in history. At first glance it might not be obvious why. But when you notice its little details, everything unravels… (thread) 🧵

On the balance between reading and texts responses in reading lessons: x.com/Suchmo83/status/157400…

Imagine your own child is pretty good at recognising words. They seem to be on a trajectory towards becoming a fluent reader, and you want to help them become really good at understanding texts and appreciating the value of reading. What would you do?

On how much writing we might want to include in reading lessons: x.com/Suchmo83/status/160477…

This is your regular reminder that it is perfectly possible - and probably desirable - for most of your reading lessons in primary school not to lead to some form of observable written outcome in books. 🧵 1/10

On the importance of class sets of books: x.com/Suchmo83/status/167293…

Many primary schools have made the transition from teaching reading primarily in small groups to whole-class teaching without considering one key component of what makes this such a potentially powerful change: class sets of books. 🧵 1/13

On the reasons why whole-class teaching of reading is a sensible default and why this doesn't mean *never* teaching small groups: x.com/Suchmo83/status/168053…

I hope you'll forgive the quote-tweet reply, but I wanted to reply at length with a thread.

On the balance between reading and responding to text in reading lessons: x.com/Suchmo83/status/173610…

In the most basic terms, reading lessons involve a mixture of reading text and responding to it (i.e. discussing text or producing written responses). And I think that in many (if not most) primary schools the balance between these two things is *way* off. A thread... 🪡

If you've got a spare minute to watch this, I'm really quite excited about it! I don't sound it in the video, but that's only because it's nap-time upstairs for the 2yo. Example objective: mathsbot.com/objective?id=40…

This is ideal for task design in reading or writing lessons 📝 Tried it out with the opening of The Island at the End of Everything - it automatically generates a great selection of vocab activities, has word level analysis… I could play around with it for ages!
rewordify.com/ is an excellent website: copy and paste any text & it will identify the tier two vocabulary. From this, the site can generate a glossary, multiple choice quizzes & more. For example: dropbox.com/s/43j5ar6o2ih0w5…

The Council is urging dog walkers and those using outside water venues to be alert following the Avian Flu outbreak. No new bird deaths have been reported but people should still keep dogs on leads and not touch sick or dead wild birds. Report dead birds to Defra: 03459 335577.

Hi all, Tomorrow’s CPD is on Behaviour Management. You will be told that when students misbehave, it is your lesson planning and delivery that is the problem, not the children. The session is expected to last just three hours and is entitled: They’re always fine for me. Thanks x
