Tomorrow someone might be old enough to vote. Tomorrow someone might be old enough to pay tax. Tomorrow someone might be old enough to work. But today they're too young to read X, Reddit or YouTube. Make it make sense.

If a student learns something from a book, that's called reading. If they learn it from a documentary, that's called research. If they learn it from YouTube, apparently it's a failure of education. Odd.

Growing up will be wild for kids in future. Be a right of passage; Facebook login at 16. Allowed to join the army at 16. First pint at 18. Keys to the door at 21.

Ban social media for under-16s. Curfews for 16 and 17-year-olds. Facial recognition and ID checks for adults. Every new restriction is sold as "protecting children". Funny how they never stop at children.

So YouTube is social media... except when it's YouTube Kids. Messaging is dangerous... except when it's WhatsApp. The internet is harmful... except for the parts the government approves. Crystal clear policy.
🚨 SUMMARY: The UK's social media ban for children from early 2027: - "User-to-user" apps where people create, share and interact with content (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Facebook) will be banned for under-16s - WhatsApp, Signal and YouTube Kids will be exempt - Under-16s will also be banned from livestreaming, messaging strangers on gaming apps like Discord and using disappearing messages - 16 and 17 year olds will face nightly social media curfews and limits on infinite scrolling with more details next month - AI "romantic companion" chatbots will be banned for under-18s - Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards

The reaction to Fable 5 being taken away is genuinely funny. You'd think it was powering the global economy. Most of the screenshots are game prototypes and apps that were never going to see a second user.

"Think of the children" has become the most effective way to sell policies that adults would otherwise question. And everyone buys it.

I hate this social media ban for under-16s. Not because I think the internet is harmless. It isn't. But because this won't solve the problem. The kids who are determined to get around it will get around it. They always do. The ones affected will mostly be ordinary teenagers using the internet to learn, socialise, follow current affairs and stay connected with friends. We've somehow reached a point where "parents should parent" has become a controversial opinion. If a platform is harmful, target the harmful features. If content is harmful, target the harmful content. But handing more responsibility to the state because some parents find it difficult to police their children is a terrible precedent. This feels like one of those policies that sounds great in a headline but achieves very little in reality.

I love scam emails. Don't own a @Trezor - but my device has been connected to a new device. Oh no!

Every time @Anthropic release a new model, they fundamentally break the whole system. Codex is calling quicker than I imagined.
