This is actually a good example of why the corporate form is so nefarious. They get special rights (special taxation formulas, perpetual existence, ability to segregate their activities and limit liability through subsidiaries) plus personhood and Constitutional rights, but none of the liabilities of being an actual person.
HOT TAKE: If businesses only have to pay taxes on profit, not revenue, then I should only have to pay taxes after I’ve paid all my bills and rent.

.@AOC is right. CVS may own your pharmacy, CVS may own your doctor, CVS may own your insurance company, CVS may own the middleman between your insurance company and your pharmacy, and they charge you at every turn. We need to break up big medicine and lower health care costs.
AOC: This is quite a bit of market concentration. Wouldn't you agree? CVS HEALTH CHAIR DAVID JOYNER: No. I'd suggest it's a model that works really well for the consumer AOC: I think it works well for CVS. Health insurance gets a cut, pharmacy benefit manager gets a cut, drug manufacturer gets a cut, and the patient gets screwed

Incredible work being done by the press to keep facts building on facts. Grateful. This entire WSJ report overnight starting with this lede on how White House orders sparked LA crackdown is both chilling and informative. /1

The complete crippling of the United States tourist industry is almost complete. People should stay away. It's simply not safe in Donald Trump's world.

Jay Powell provided false testimony to Congress in February, when he told a House committee that the Federal Reserve had "had no contact" with DOGE. Turns out, Fed staff met with DOGE personnel in January to approve access to critical payment systems. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

@BobOnderMO I listened to first 10 of your town hall. Your claim as a proud DOGE caucus mem seeking government fraud ignores work @USGAO has done for many years with far more detail and balance.

Might not feel this way on twitter - but back here on earth, DOGE did not have a great day yesterday on the @USAID front. Elon's attempt to speedrun the destruction of USAID is starting to hit real legal and political bumps. The pushback is starting - and must be sustained. 🧵

Once again, no one elected Elon Musk to do anything, he's not been confirmed by the Senate to do anything, and he has zero authority to unilaterally stop federal government payments for anything. This is a five-alarm constitutional crisis.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

As a Brit, I've been watching the American election results with sorrow for my American friends. Some are comparing it to the Brexit vote here, imagining if we'd voted for Brexit twice. But here's the thing... in a sense, we did. And here are some lessons from it. 🧵

From me: Tomorrow America elects a new administration. The current administration did something novel—some officials actually tried to govern. That's why corporate America is so mad. The whole-of-government approach works. We should keep it: prospect.org/economy/2024-11…

150 billionaire families have spent $1.9 billion on the 2024 election so far. It's a huge amount of money — but it represents just 0.07% of their overall wealth. It essentially costs them nothing to drown our democracy in cash. We must overturn Citizens United.

Amazon and Walmart are the largest US companies by both revenue and number of employees. But 87% of jobs for Amazon and 91% for Walmart pay less than $20/hr. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos is worth $207B and the Walton family is worth $267B. See the problem here?

ProPublica found four women now who've died because of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, exposing two central problems with the press: 1. ProPublica found them and not the New York Times 2. Joe Biden's 'garbage' comment can lead the evening news but not these women's deaths

How do we know that Lina Khan has done an excellent job as FTC chair? Because billionaires and business leaders want her gone. She's been an avid anti-trust enforcer and defender of working people. She's also been an oligarch's worst nightmare.

Yes. If only the Dems had a real program to tackle this. Instead, the issue belongs to that toxic crackpot, JFK Jr.
It’s great how we are just utterly and completely drowning in toxins in every sphere of our lives. Our environment, food, clothing, water, air, consumer products, homes, workplaces, buildings, this is great.

Corporate America and big business wants Donald Trump to win.
Billionaires spend nearly $2 billion on the 2024 US presidential election (60% more than during the 2020 election). Almost three quarters of billionaire campaign spending goes to Republicans. Such massive billionaire campaign spending is not a sign of a healthy democracy.
