September 12, 2024 Bowie Police Sgt. Robert Warrington fired at an unarmed man alongside a highway in Bowie, Maryland, after mistakenly believing the man had a gun. The man was returning to his vehicle after retrieving a hat and was not armed. The shot missed him and instead struck a passing vehicle, causing no injuries. Body-camera footage shows Warrington repeatedly saying, “I’m sorry” after the shooting. He was later charged and, in 2026, convicted of attempted second-degree murder and other offenses.
