Today, attacks on press freedom around the world are intensifying; campus and independent media continue to face red-tagging, surveillance, and state repression. In Gaza, the genocide has become one of the deadliest assaults on journalists in history—with over 100 Palestinian media workers killed by Israeli forces since October 2023. In the Philippines, press freedom remains under siege, with killings of journalists continuing into 2025 and a worsening climate of harassment and censorship that extends even to campus publications. Yet, Filipino journalists persist in their duty to inform the public, resist disinformation, and challenge anti-people policies imposed by those in power.
To write is already to choose.

NOW HAPPENING | Following the ongoing next CSM dean selection, a sectoral consultation with the dean nominees Assoc. Prof. Jackie Lou J. Tagubase and Asst. Prof. Vicente B. Calag is currently happening at the CSM 227 today, May 5, 2026.
Consultations with the students and alumni, faculty, admin staff and REPS are expected this afternoon.
Classes scheduled during this timeline are set in asynchronous mode. Students are highly encouraged to participate in the consultation.

A question was asked regarding fast tracking concerns on the reported maintenance concerns of some equipment in the CSM building such as aircon, water fountains, and electric sockets.
Calag suggests reaching out to alumni and friend industries in hopes to ask help in funding some of the college's operating expenses.
Tagubase agrees with Calag's answers and also asks coordination with the students on proper usage of facilities and equipment in the college.
"Handle them with care kasi mahirap ang repair, mahirap i-request so do you part as well. We will allot funds for spare parts in case of emergency," she adds.

NOW HAPPENING | College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) Dean Cleto Nañola Jr.'s State of the College Address (SOCA) is currently underway at the CSM Room 227 and via online at Zoom today, May 4, 2026.
In line with the ongoing dean selection process, the SOCA will be followed with the presentation of the nominees' vision, mission, and goals for the next three years.
Students may join the Zoom meeting through the details sent through their respective UP emails.

A question was raised regarding contingency measures they will put to ensure adequate classroom allocation and temporary facilities for CSM constituents given the planned renovation of the CSM building.
Tagubase proposes maximizing the available rooms by scheduling the utilization of rooms. She also adds exploring blended learning as one of the measures.
Calag also answers scheduling as one of his measures.
"They can work overtime, they can work at nighttime, or they can work on weekend, or we can implement the renovation during summer break," Calag says.
Calag also raises lobbying for more funding for infrastructure developments through the top management and the right offices.
