It's not enough to simply understand the basics when you think about them -- you need to become so effortlessly proficient that you don't even need to think about them. That's how you become capable of thinking beyond them.

The nerve!
I caught an employee customizing his desktop background. It was a photo of his family at the beach. Smiling, waves crashing, pure joy. I asked why he changed it from the standard company logo. He said it motivates him during long hours. I explained that personal images can dilute brand immersion. He argued it's just a background, not hurting anyone. I nodded and updated his profile with "potential loyalty drift." Then I reset his desktop remotely. Now it's our logo again.

If hiring were astronomical: 1. HR would be a black hole — applications go in, feedback never comes out. 2. The boss would be gravity — constantly pulling you toward stress. 3. Workmates would be moons — reflecting your light while claiming it as theirs. 4. Job portals would be wormholes — you enter once and never escape. 5. Interviews would be eclipses — months of preparation, seconds of darkness. 6. “We’ll get back to you” would be dark matter — discussed in theory, missing in reality. 7. Low salaries would be dwarf stars — burning effort with little energy output. 8. ATS would be an asteroid field — most CVs destroyed before landing. 9. Experience requirements would be light-years — impossible distances for juniors. 10. Panel interviews would be constellations — too many stars, no clear direction. 11. Burnout would be the supernova — bright performers collapsing from overuse

We are hiring a Head of Preparedness. This is a critical role at an important time; models are improving quickly and are now capable of many great things, but they are also starting to present some real challenges. The potential impact of models on mental health was something we saw a preview of in 2025; we are just now seeing models get so good at computer security they are beginning to find critical vulnerabilities. We have a strong foundation of measuring growing capabilities, but we are entering a world where we need more nuanced understanding and measurement of how those capabilities could be abused, and how we can limit those downsides both in our products and in the world, in a way that lets us all enjoy the tremendous benefits. These questions are hard and there is little precedent; a lot of ideas that sound good have some real edge cases. If you want to help the world figure out how to enable cybersecurity defenders with cutting edge capabilities while ensuring attackers can't use them for harm, ideally by making all systems more secure, and similarly for how we release biological capabilities and even gain confidence in the safety of running systems that can self-improve, please consider applying. Probably never happened.
Our CFO asked me to "audit" our software subscriptions last week. He sent me a spreadsheet with 200 rows. Slack, Zoom, Jira, Notion, Trello, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. He wanted me to survey the team to see which tools were essential. I told him: "Surveys are for people who care about feelings. I care about OpEx." I deleted the spreadsheet. Instead, I logged into the corporate Amex portal and reported the card as lost. Every single auto-renewal in the company failed instantly. I call this "The Scream Test." It’s simple Darwinian procurement. If a tool goes down and nobody runs to my desk screaming within 4 hours? We didn't need it. The Marketing team was at my door in 10 minutes begging for Adobe. We renewed it. The Sales team was crying about the CRM in 20 minutes. We renewed it. But here’s the interesting part. The HR department’s "Employee Wellness & Engagement Portal" ($12,000/year) has been down for six days. Not a single person has noticed. I didn't just save money. I quantified the exact value of our corporate culture. It is zero. Stop auditing. Start unplugging. If it’s important, they’ll scream. If they don't scream, it’s just noise.
