I just finished my first op-ed series in Forbes. Eleven pieces over four months. It was hard, but also one of the more insightful things I have done for myself in a while.
Writing forces focus, reflection and creativity that is hard to find in the day to day. You already know what you want to say because you talk about these things constantly. The hard part is sitting down and expanding on them.
Consistency was the biggest challenge. I would spend 2 to 3 hours on Sunday nights or on flights to get pieces done. A creative mindset during the workday or when my son was up was nearly impossible. But after a few consistent weeks I got much faster at the process.
The views on a Forbes piece were often lower than what I would get on a LinkedIn post so I was not doing it for the views. However, there is something to be said about being published and pushing yourself to do something uncomfortable.
I plan to keep writing twice a month. Mostly on LinkedIn and Twitter where my core audience is. Publications like Forbes give access to new audiences which has its own value, but this is where the real conversation happens.
I do not like reading books. I mostly listen to podcasts and read blog posts. But I found my voice through writing and I think everyone should find theirs. Whether that is writing, podcasting, vlogging, TikTok or something else, there is an avenue for all of us.
It is not necessary. But I have found it helps more than it hurts.
