As most residents now know, the remains of Staff Sgt. Michael Uhrin, a 21 year-old Metuchen resident who was killed in October 1943 while serving as a radio operator on a bombing raid over Germany during World War II, will be returning to Metuchen this weekend. Uhrin’s remains were considered “nonrecoverable” until 2021 when the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified his remains using dental, anthropological and other evidence.
The importance of understanding sacrifice in the context of Memorial Day takes on a greater meaning for all of us this weekend. I welcome all residents to join me in keeping Uhrin and his family members, some of whom have joined us this weekend, in your thoughts throughout the weekend. Although Uhrin’s immediate family will never know that Michael’s remains would come back to Metuchen, it should give us all great comfort to know that our nation and our Borough never forgot him and will continue to honor his legacy. 🇺🇸
