A total solar eclipse will pass over the ERCOT region on Monday, April 8, 2024, between approximately 12:10 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. CDT. ERCOT has been proactively working on forecasting models to reflect reduced solar power production (similar to a sunset and sunrise in the middle of the day) and does not expect any grid reliability concerns during the eclipse. ERCOT will continue to monitor conditions and keep the public informed through our communications channels.

A few thoughts:
- ERCOT is 40% carbon-free
- solar looking like wind circa 2010
- coal decline offset by wind solar
- gas variability driven by gas prices
- wind & solar are not displacing gas at all

Hot off the (digital ;) press! @ideasmithsLLC ran an analysis for @GridLabEnergy and found that an additional 10 GW of solar during Uri would have provided enough power to turn on over 1 million Texas homes between 4 and 8 hours per day. Check it out!

Solar has a low capacity value in winter, but it still produces energy. @joshdr83 did an analysis of how all the new solar in Texas could have mitigated the outages during winter storm Uri. Solar could have helped a million homes have some power.
