It’s not just truckers who are frustrated and frightened. Far from it.
California’s AB5 hit more than 600 professions, and that was with more than 100 professions ultimately exempted. Nationwide there will be no exemptions. We’re talking about realtors, paralegals, writers, translators, traveling nurses, graphic designers, forensic nurses, cartographers, veterinarians, computer coders—millions and millions of us who are self-employed in all kinds of ways and (per US Census) contribute $1.3 trillion to the economy.
All of us hardworking, legitimate independent contractors are sick and tired of pols targeting us because union organizers can’t figure out how to get more members voluntarily. It’s immoral. It’s why we testified before Congress in 2023 as witnesses for the GOP. It’s why we are suing the Biden administration in federal court. It’s why so many of us voted red this time instead of blue: because the GOP, including President Trump, have been trying to help us stop this insanity since it started in California with AB5. The GOP is correct to keep protecting us and everyone’s freedom to be an entrepreneur in this country if that’s how we choose to earn a living.
The Trump administration should not make the same mistake the Democrats have made. Labor policy shouldn’t be, and doesn’t have to be, unions against everyone else. Unions should have a seat at the table, but they should not run the table. That table belongs to us all, including the majority who tell Gallup we support the existence of unions, but we have no interest in joining one ourselves.
We voted for the GOP to get back to having a Labor Department that will be of, by and for ALL the people—and no longer of, by and for the unions alone, the way Biden-Harris weaponized it against us.
I’m thrilled to hear that Republican senators are still standing up for this basic freedom to earn a living. I am personally grateful that they are protecting Americans like me. I hope that two of our heroes on this policy issue, Senators Tim Scott and Bill Cassidy, are in there educating everyone about the importance of protecting the entrepreneurial path to the American Dream.
The GOP should Make America Work Again, for us all—starting at the top of the Labor Department.
