Lay people in mathematics never truly understand how great of a genius Ramanujan was. For example, first, in the picture below are some famous infinite series / product expansions for the mathematical constant π. All these are made of small numbers and converge moderately. All of these formulae (except Ramanujan's) were methodically proved by the people involved after following logical steps of derivations or they came out as a result of again logically and systematically solving other mathematical problems.
But look at the last formulae by Ramanujan consisting of gigantic numbers, factorials and exponentials ! Ramanujan wasn’t formally trained at mathematics and in fact struggled at formal proofs and derivations. Then, how did he give such out-of-the-world formulae!! He would either just sit and meditate upon the goddess Nāmagiri to come up with crazy formulas like these or the goddess herself would come in his dreams to write such formulas, only for other formally trained mathematicians to struggle but prove them correct. The above series for pi given by Ramanujan is not just another novelty of mathematics but is also very important computationally. It converges extremely quickly and adds about eight decimal places of accuracy per term, making it highly efficient for calculating pi to extreme precision, a method later used by William Gosper to find 17 millions digits of pi. It forms the basis for a more general class of series inspired from Ramanujan, also called Ramanujan-Sato series. These series are fundamental in modern physics, and has even appeared in conformal field theories while studying black holes!
Ramanujan was not just another genius and prodigy like Euler or Gauss or Leibniz. He was literally out of the world and a godly figure in mathematics !!
