Tensions prevailed at Patna’s Patliputra Railway Station on Sunday after a large crowd of candidates travelling to appear for the Bihar Police Prohibition (Excise) Constable examination gathered at the station in the early hours, leading to disruptions, stone-pelting and damage to property. Police later used force to disperse the crowd and restore normalcy.
According to officials, some individuals repeatedly pulled emergency chains, demanded special trains and allegedly prevented candidates willing to travel from boarding trains. Authorities said the unrest escalated when a section of protesters resorted to stone-pelting, prompting intervention by the district police, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP).
Patna District Magistrate Dr Thiyagarajan S M said special trains had already been arranged, but alleged that anti-social elements mixed with the protesters and contributed to the violence.
East Central Railway said a large number of examination candidates had assembled at the station and stopped the Seemanchal Express, while a section of “so-called students” allegedly attempted to create disturbances. Railway authorities said special train services had been arranged in advance, with 16 special trains kept ready to facilitate travel for candidates across Bihar.
Officials said train operations have since normalised and the situation remains peaceful. CCTV footage and video recordings are being examined to identify those involved, and authorities said appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible.
