15 June 1941 | Polish Franciscan Father Maksymilian Maria Kolbe, imprisoned in Auschwitz (no. 16670), wrote a letter in the camp to his mother, Marianna, who was living in the convent of the Felician Sisters in Kraków. He informed her that he had been imprisoned in the camp, but asked her not to reply to the letter because he did not know how long he would remain in Auschwitz. “My dear Mother, I arrived at the camp in Auschwitz (Oświęcim) with a transport at the end of May. Everything is fine with me. Be at peace about me, dear Mother. My health is good. 10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk

I think I can just remember a time when the vast majority of migrants who sought sanctuary on UK shores were received with compassion & understanding. It was repaid by most contributing massively to our society. We have now descended into a sewer of inhumanity that shames us.
