Before the boat even capsized, around 30 people had already suffocated.
Traffickers had forced passengers into storage compartments to hide them from patrols. When people begged for water, they closed the hatches.

In the same camp, Umatara holds photos of her daughter Habiba and her grandson Muhammad Salman. They were going to Malaysia to reunite with Habiba's husband. She has heard nothing since the boat went down.
"She went only dreaming of raising a family," Umatara says. "My heart aches. It cries. I can't stand it anymore."
