Hello @MartinSLewis - I believe in the past you have advised people they can (legally) avoid paying High Income Child Benefit Charge by paying pension contributions, thereby reducing their taxable income? 1/x

@MartinSLewis Looking ahead to the budget, there is talk that the government might scrap or reduce your right to make tax-free pension contributions? Could this have an unforeseen knock-on effect in terms of child benefit (reinforcing that pesky cliff-edge)? 🤔 2/2

If a politician has nothing to do with his wife's financial affairs, then why is the UK govt sanctioning Putin's wife? #bbcqt

Came for the original source material for the phrase "Jam tomorrow" (left); got the UK government's dismissive attitude to Partygate as a bonus (right) in the same double-page spread. @JohnRentoul - you might like this?

(The bit on the right reminded me of Dominic Raab's claim that the Met wouldn't investigate 'past crimes', which presumably leaves only 'future crimes' within their remit.)

The ERG's malign influence on politics isn't dependent on who is the Prime Minister (they can pull x's strings but not so much for y), rather it is contingent on there being uncertainty as to who occupies the post of PM, and whether they might get replaced in the near future. 1/2

Once Johnson has been replaced, the ERG will no longer be in such a position of influence - they couldn't conceivably get rid of yet *another* PM without triggering a general election in which the Tories would be routed. So it's best for the nation that Johnson goes soon. 2/3

(But for the same reason, it suits the ERG for the uncertainty over Johnson's future to continue, so I don't think many of them will be submitting letters to the 1922 Committee, apart from the likes of Bridgen who is more suited to 1-dimensional chess than the 3D version.) 3/3

So who's Boris going to replace Matt Hancock with as Health Secretary? My money's on Gavin Williamson for the pure nation-trolling bantz.

I’m still trying to get action on PM’s systematic lying in parliament The BBC asks whether people care about it Please RT if you do
Alastair Campbell - “Peter Stefanovic’s video has had 12 million views. Every day he asks BBC why will you not play these clips of Johnson in Parliament lying at dispatch box. PM’s are meant to resign if they lie at dispatch box” BBC interviewer “Do people care?” YES @BBCNews

We're only five weeks in, but 2021 memes have already thrown up two possible candidates for the post-result newspaper headlines, whenever the inevitable Scottish IndyRef2 takes place: - "You have NO authority here, Boris Johnson!"; - "We'll take our leave and go."
And therein lies the problem with Brexit.
Next Sunday will be the anniversary of the first UK case of Covid-19 - a disease which has now taken 100,000 British lives. How about designating 31st January as a national day of remembrance to mark this sombre occasion annually? Please share or retweet if you agree.

It's time for Keir Starmer to start referring to Boris Johnson as "a relic from the Trump era" at every available opportunity. That would get right under his skin.

Was it just me, or did anyone else think that Nigel Farage appeared to be throwing in the towel on last night's @Peston show? He didn't seem to have the same zeal about him, which could free up political ground for Johnson to make a deal with the EU? @nicktolhurst

Aldi's Christmas advert is totally unrepresentative of society. All the characters are carrots, with not a sprout or broccoli in sight! Brassica Lives Matter!!
Two questions that will define the outcome of the next general election: (1) Will Boris Johnson still be Prime Minster? (2) If so, will his 'Red Wall' voters believe him when he tells them that they are now better off* after five years of his leadership? *Spoiler: they won't be.

(To clarify, it is axiomatic that northern voters will NOT be better off in 2024; the question is whether they will believe Johnson's boosterish claims to the contrary.)
