The CDC in the US estimated that 1 in 110 children had autism spectrum disorder. The previous statistics suggested in 2007, this rate was 1 in 150.
The increase in the prevalence of autism was attributed by the CDC to the advancements in diagnostic and screening techniques.
The DSM-IV, released in 1994 and revised in 2000, was the 1st edition to categorize autism as a spectrum. This version listed five conditions with distinct features.
The prevalence of autistim has always existed.
The diagnosis and specific support for neurodiversity did not.

A big lesson in OUR school in Philly:
To get kids in the driver’s seat

“The problem is none of the things that anyone else discusses. The problem is the curriculum not based on what the student needs, it’s based on some idea that’s proven not to be really effective.”

Desks in rows does work for some students & some subjects.
“Lecture”/teacher directed lessons are sometimes the best way to contextualize learning.
We do not need to exist in competing silos to orient what works & what matters. There is a spectrum.

Student success stories need more humanization.
While traditional markers of success can be valuable,
they must be used as a means for a deeper layer:
-thinking creatively,
-acting compassionately, &
-engaging meaningfully in the world.
This is our WHY.
