Ss often believe that learning is all about speed and getting the answer first. This often diminishes the thinking process and can cause anxiety in the classroom. This strategy can help Ss understand the importance of taking time to think through their ideas before they share.

Students need to be taught that graphemes and letter combinations represent phonemes. Then, they can progress to blending these sounds, moving from the sounds to syllables to multi-syllabic words.
