Statement from Albanians for America (AFA) on Recent Protests in Albania
Albanians for America (AFA) is closely following the ongoing public protests surrounding proposed tourism and development projects along Albania's southern coastline, including the discussions related to Zvërnec.
As an organization committed to strengthening the ties between the United States and the Albanian people, we believe it is important to reaffirm a principle that should not be lost in the current debate: the concerns being expressed by citizens are not a rejection of American investment, nor are they a rejection of international partnerships.
Albanians have long welcomed American engagement and continue to view the United States as one of Albania's closest and most trusted partners.
Responsible foreign investment can create jobs, expand economic opportunities, strengthen local communities, and contribute to Albania's long-term prosperity. At the same time, sustainable development requires transparency, accountability, and meaningful public engagement.
Citizens have a legitimate right to seek clarity about projects that may affect protected natural areas, local communities, cultural heritage, and the future character of Albania's coastline. The question before Albania is larger than any single investment project. It is about how decisions of national importance are made, how communities are consulted, and how economic development can be balanced with environmental stewardship and the rule of law.
AFA believes that strong democracies are built when institutions listen to citizens, when public concerns are addressed openly, and when major development initiatives are guided by clear, transparent, and predictable processes. These principles are not obstacles to investment but the foundation of long-term investor confidence and sustainable economic growth.
As Albania continues its path toward European integration, public trust will be strengthened through open decision-making, accountable governance, and respect for democratic participation. We support economic development, investment, and opportunity. We also believe that lasting progress is achieved when development is pursued with transparency, respect for communities, and careful consideration of Albania's unique natural and environmental heritage.
The future of Albania should be shaped through dialogue, accountability, and institutions that serve the public interest.
AFA encourages constructive dialogue among government institutions, local communities, civil society organizations, independent experts, and investors to ensure that decisions affecting Albania's future are made transparently, responsibly, and in a manner that serves the interests of the Albanian people.
