Very pleased to have this huge chunk of my PhD out in @GenomeBiolEvol! Lots of cool stories about genes involved in detoxification and steroid metabolism in insects, as well as lessons about what evolution can teach us about gene function…

ALT Identification and annotation of the EcKL gene family in 140 insect genomes. A. EcKLs annotated in 140 insect genome assemblies spread across 11 taxonomic orders (left) and 59 taxonomic families (right). See supplementary table S1, Supplementary Material online for details of the assemblies used. Silhouettes of insects from each order are public domain images from PhyloPic (https://www.phylopic.org/). B, C) The number of EcKL genes annotated in insect genome assemblies varies between and within orders. B) The distribution of EcKL genes per genome per order. Shaded areas are ranges, vertical lines are medians.
Also congratulations to Sanjay Kumar Pradhan from @westsyduhie who has won a NovaSeq 6000 S1 Flowcell library construction from @illumina & @ramacgenomics to explore the Queensland fruit fly virome!
We're excited to see the outcomes of both of these experiments in the future!
GSA Student Research Grant 2023-24: Congratulations to Mary Hawkes from @OtagoBiochemist who has won a NovaSeq 6000 S1 Flowcell library construction from @illumina & @AgResearchNEWS to investigate the transcriptomes of early development in kuku (green lipped mussel)!
My last PhD paper is up as a preprint! Have a read if you like functional genetics in Drosophila, insect hormones, or incongruous results between CRISPR and RNAi…
③ Instead of Fisher’s exact test for the comparison of proportions, you can now use the new DABEST proportion plots. It plots the variance of the observed binary counts and the effect-size curve of the difference of proportions. This function can be used with repeated measures.
Exciting news for dabestr users! We are releasing dabestr version “Lapis” (v2023.9.12), which adds estimation graphics for four new data types: repeated measures, 2 × 2 designs, proportions, and easy meta-analyses. 🧵
