The return of the nighthawks. Right on cue. I always see them before the monsoons begin. I have seen more than 20 swooping about catching bugs in the light but only on the north (mountain) side of my house.
Went out to check the flames after the brief rain but they are still going. Yes, I have reported the fire. As my house is pretty much the closest to the fire, I made sure. ๐ณ
Hoping the brief rain slows its progression down the hill. Yikes.
No rain, yet. But, the nighthawks returned last evening so I knew the monsoon season was coming. You can smell the petrichor on the breeze and hear the thunder echo across the Catalinas.
Itโs heaven in the foothills of Tucson.
Hard to see as Iโm filming through a window and 4 chicks are in the shade, but all 9 babies survived another night outside the patio walls. Baby quail season is so stressful.

I let the quail babies out from the safety of the back patio. I could see they were trying to fly over the walls and was afraid one or two wouldnโt make it. So, Iโm happy to see they found their lunch on one of the outside patios.
A little family dinner for 12 tonight. Steak, twice baked potatoes, asparagus, green chili cheese sour dough, and lemon pound cake with home made vanilla ice cream and berries.
It takes a full day every other year to clean this thing. But, the before and after is always so satisfying. Also, a good visual illustration of how dusty living the desert can be.
Hello, @JustinWilmethAZ!
Read your OpEd in the Daily Star. Curious to know your source for this quote (attached) that APS requests a rate increase every 6 years? Seems like APS and TEP ask for increases almost annually. Please share your source. : )
Those of us that live in the Sonoran Desert tend to dread summer. But, we have 4 positive things that come with the heat- less traffic, easier time getting a dinner reservation, baby quail, and Trader Joeโs peonies.
The Baby Bebรฉ has graduated college. Another ceremony done and dusted- magna cum laude, natch๐.
Not sure there is anything worse than coming home without the graduate, though. I should feel blessed they have jobs and grad school but I am so homesick for them! ๐ข
