Last night I met up with an old Navy buddy. We have known each other for 25 years, and more or less stayed in touch. When I was on shore duty in Yokosuka in the mid-90's, he and I worked quite closely together on a team of two setting up all the communications channels required at the time.
Hanging with an old military friend reminded me of when I was in Navy boot camp. Of all the companies forming every week in San Diego, mine had both a Jarkoff and a Wyckoff. Our company commanders unsurprisingly yet affectionately referred to us as "jack-off" and "whack-off"🤣
Surprise surprise, right?🤭
To this day I firmly believe San Dawg boot camp purposely put us in the same company specifically to fsck with us.
At the time all I could do was laugh. Even now, 35-years later, I still crack up about it when retelling the story to different friends. The military does crazy stuff like this to people, but the camaraderie it builds is unlike nothing else I have ever experienced.
At the end of the day, life sure can be funny.
