My 10 Takeaways from the United States' dominant 4-1 win over Paraguay to begin their
#WorldCup campaign :
1) I don't know how far they'll go, but this is CLEARLY the most talented
#USMNT team in my lifetime, over four decades on planet ert. All those guys playing in Europe is paying off and they just look like a team that can compete at a high level. A lot of that has to do with.....
2) Mauricio Pochettino. I said 6 months ago that I liked the style that Poch was trying to play with this group & you saw it in full effect tonight. Aggressive runs in behind the defense, the ball popping around quickly, a gameplan that highlights your top players and pressing high & getting the ball back quickly if you lose it. Not sure he could have expected much better.
3) How great is it to have an ACTUAL #9!!!! The Americans have been desperately searching for a legit DUDE at the top of the pitch for YEARS and they've found it in Flo Balogun. He can really do it all as a striker, and he strikes fear in the hearts of opposing defenses. First multi-goal game for an American since 1930?!?!? Wow!
4) I said this four years ago and I'll say it again. Watch out for Antonee Robinson. "Jedi" was an absolute force down the left side tonight & if I'm Manchester United or another big club in Europe, I'm getting on the horn with Fulham YESTERDAY and doing whatever it takes to bring him in. I think he has the potential to be a Top 5 LB in the world. Yes, an American player can be a top 5 player in the WORLD at his position. He is that good.
5) Am I worried about the goal conceded? No, I'm not. It came right after Dest was subbed off for Weah and the defense got a little confused on a play that really sprouted out of nothing. Two different profiles for Dest & Weah and if that's the swap you make, everyone HAS to know their positional responsibilities on the pitch. Poch will get it right. Not concerned.
6) We've heard the name Gio Reyna for years. Obviously with his dad Claudio reppin' the stars & stripes, there was a lot of talk whether or not we could see big things from the US's #7. And we saw that special talent tonight with a fantastic goal to punctuate the victory. That moment of brilliance right there is a highlight to remember, because the best teams in this competition have STUDS on the bench who can change the game with one strike of the ball. Outside of the foot? I mean, come on, that was sick!
7) I don't care if he's 28, 38 or 48. Tim Ream can STILL play in the heart of that defense. He's so calm on the ball & a stabilizing force at CB for the USA. Look at that play where he SLIPPED on the pitch and STILL HEADED the ball safely to a teammate. Ream, Alex Freeman, Chris Richards, Dest & Jedi.....take a bow gents.
8) Tyler and Tillman! Tyler Adams led the team with 9 duels won and TWELVE defensive interventions. A lot of people think he's the key to success for the U.S. and we've seen it for a while for the USMNT, he is a monster. And Malik Tillman with FIVE shots, he is the guy that shows you how this team has made up ground on the other teams around the world. He can do it all on the pitch and he was fantastic tonight.
9) A lot of people are asking....."is the United States good or is Paraguay that bad"? To me, it's not WHO you play, it's HOW you play. You can't control who your opponent is. If I would have told you before the game, that the U.S. would draw 1-1 against an inferior opponent, that they looked like they were a little anxious and struggled under the big lights.....would you be surprised? NO! So the fact that they came out and did THAT, especially in the first half, that was impressive. That SHOULD make you want to tune into the next game. The competition will get better no doubt, but tonight was NOT a fluke.
10) Last, but not least. If the United States has ANY chance to make noise in this
#WorldCup , their best players have to be their best players. And right from the jump, Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic were DOMINANT. McKennie has done such a great job improving his stamina & finding the spots on the grass where he can influence the game the most. I really like him being higher up on the pitch and having his fingerprints on everything the U.S. is doing. And Pulisic.....THAT is the kind of guy this team needs. He went RIGHT AFTER every defender that tried to step to him. That was like Allen Iverson in the early 2000s trying to break everyone's ankles & put them on a highlight reel. A man on a mission. Liiiiiiitle bit concerned about the calf injury, but smart move by Poch getting him out of there with a 3-0 lead at the half. Just shows how big that second goal by Balogun was.
A great night for soccer fans in this country & all around the world. That was fun.
Time for bed. I'm spent.
Can't wait for the next one!
