Startup marketers deserve a seat at the table when talking about pricing and packaging
They are at the front line talking to customers
The right pricing and packaging comes with customer feedback
Make sure to include marketers in the convo
One of the biggest challenges in startup marketing is not related to product, sales, etc:
It's maintaining personal well-being stability
This month started the wrong way:
- Sick
- Allergies
- Sinus infection
It slowed my progress a ton
Staying healthy is so key to success
When working on a strategy for a new idea as a startup marketer
Try setting up a time block around the research
A limit of time you'll spend crafting the plan
I like this because it's so easy to spend too much time writing the plan over executing
You can always add later!
Communication is the ultimate unblocker for startup marketers
If you're stuck on something:
- Bounce ideas off your team
- Get feedback from an SME
- Talk to other marketers
- Call a mentor
You can even try ChatGPT
So many ways to get unstuck just by communicating
The worst thing you can do in startup marketing is let failure affect you
If something doesn't end up working, don't let it affect you and your output
Acknowledge it
Learn from it
Move on
Failure is bound to happen
The best thing you can do is keep pushing
Too many startup marketers try to add in another growth lever when there's another active lever that still has potential
Until you see diminishing returns from effort
I.e. 1 effort unit yields <1 growth unit
You should keep going!
As a startup marketer, I prefer several small bets over one really big bet
Why?
1. When small bets work, you see the wins add up in real-time
2. If your big bet doesn't work, you might be screwed
Small bets de-risk the growth process
It's so easy as a startup marketer to get lazy after things start working
No innovating
Nothing added net new
Running the same playbook
When that happens you need to either:
A) Take a vacation and return with new ideas
B) Find a new role because you're tapped out
Copying is a really effective strategy for startup marketers
Find companies that sell to same ICP
Pay attention to their writing style
Look at the ads they run
Check out their emails
View their content
And then copy and tweak to your product
Easier than building from scratch
Lots of startup marketers are going to use AI in 2024 to "get more done with less"
That's great news!
But you need to make sure your workflow is AI-assisted vs AI-led
Here's my suggested flow:
AI generates draft
Human review
Then publish
More likely to create impact this way
It's so important to time block as a startup marketer when you work on something new
Easy to spend too much time building the playbook over launching
When you have something new to create try to block out 1.5 hours max to set up an initial workflow
You can always add later!
Hope to see more startup marketers tied to revenue goals in 2024
You might not be able to close the deal yourself but if you know your funnel and you can see what you're contributing you should get close
Startup marketers have to contribute to the bottom line, simply put
I appreciate being proved wrong as a startup marketer
Not afraid for my opinions or theories to be incorrect
This is the mindset you need for startup marketing
The goal is simply to learn, get better, and contribute in a meaningful way
A startup marketing opinion I've let go of over the past 12 months:
Event marketing is not the best use of budget
Truth:
Events can be a great way to grow if:
- It's where your audience hangs out
- You have a high ACV product
- It's a memorable experience
Sometimes startup marketing requires you to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself
Sometimes it requires you to give it some budget to truly work
And sometimes it requires you handing it off with budget to someone smarter than you
Knowing which lever to pull is key to success
Startup marketing tips for when you don't know how to do something:
1. Write down an idea for your best attempt
2. Google to fill in the details for your plan
3. Get help from your network
4. Just execute
Even if you fail, you'll most likely learn how to do it better
